LJL FVL-1

FVL-1 was based around opening up the artistic side in the student and improve their ability to think out of the ordinary. We learnt how to use dots to make lines/shapes/textures.

Chuck Jones' The Dot and the Line - A Romance in Lower Mathematics

ELEMENTS OF VISUAL LANGUAGE

  • What i saw in ' A Romance in Lower Mathematics ' was that i only used a line as a line. Point A to B or like a squiggle. I never looked at it as a way to make shapes, angles, or complex designs. After attending the 6 classes i was able to illustrate lines with dots, make shapes with them, illustrate certain concepts.

  • For my thematic representation of Power, i made a structure with pillars and a strong base to show how strong the structure was and how it could hold the weight of the everything above it. For one of my Depth representations, i made a straight road leading into the distance. As a thought it seems like a good idea, but i could've/should've added more to the representation. Maybe had some vehicles, or something to the side of the road.

DAILY DRAWING DOCUMENT (DDD)

DDD is something one shouldn't forget about, because if you do, it'll backfire on you in such a way that will have you scratching your head as to how do i cope up with it. But DDD isn't meant to give you trouble, its more like a relaxing side activity. I, however didn't start it religiously and started getting some backlog of it.

  • My most effective sketches came surprisingly when i was in no mood to sketch, often it'd be 2.30/3am. I'd be really sleepy and something in me would make me do some sketches and they turned out pretty good (compared to my other work XD ).

  • As for my least effective sketch, i just couldn't translate the depth in the shoe properly.

  • I've never done sketching so doing the DDD proved to be a challenge. Getting the basic structure of the shoe properly, erasing the lines over and again (even though these are meant to be quick sketches). This kindof explains why i didn't try any other mediums.

  • As for how i'll change my way of doing DDD; I'll make sure not to disregard the work, take small breaks like every 5-7 sketches change the subject so to not create a mental block working on the same subject and to help clear my mind. Try and focus on quantity or quality. Use different mediums, work on the perspective in the sketches.

CONCLUSION

  • The first week of FVL-1 was amazing, i felt very free in what i was doing, very confident in myself and the work i was doing. Every morning i was pumped to start making dots, but as the second week began i could feel a certain block that at the lowest point had me lying on my bed staring at the ceiling for over an hour during a class.

  • There were times when the feedback i received was a little confusing as some of my peers were doing similar if not the exact same work i was doing, like working on the excess negative space or the proportions. But the benefit of being in online class and seeing others work while they got their feedback helped me understand how i was not doing the right work.
